Tiamat- Prey PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Cole
Thursday, 22 July 2004

Artist: Tiamat
CD Title: Prey
Label: Century Media
Reviewer: John Cole
Date: 7/22/04

Be warned; the tracks contained within this album will make you feel emotions you did not know exist. Johan Edlund’s morbid and calm voice speaks to the inner demons, awakening fears of loss and bringing back memories of heartache. Tiamat for years now has been known for making dark experimental music, yet somehow keeping the metal roots alive and well. Prey brings us a new extreme in the madness, somehow more depressing than ever and often reminding the listener of Pink Floyd. From the opening track "Cain" the music grabs the listeners hand, taking you down a path not yet explored within the confines of the mind.

The single biggest surprise is the addition of female vocals on "Divided" and "Carry your cross and I’ll carry mine". While this is not a new thing for many bands nowadays, Tiamat does this better than anyone my ears have ever heard. The whole album flows together so well it blows my mind Tiamat are not currently the biggest band in the world. A feeling comes across that grabs your soul and pulls you along for the ride, never letting go. Every guitar solo seems to come from another world, resting on top of this netherworlds dark atmosphere.

The feeling of misery comforts you like a blanket, keeping you warm and safe from a cold dead world. For those who have not yet experienced Tiamat’s newest odyssey, now is the chance to do so. Prey is without a doubt the most under rated album to come out in 2003, come find out what you have been missing out on.
